Joe Eldridge, graduate of Auburn University, was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at age 10 in December of 1992. Being the first juvenile diabetic ever in his family
history, his family knew little about the disease.
Joe competed on competitive soccer teams from ages 11 to 18. During this time he traveled Across the southeast competing in tournaments. Joe decided to play football his senior year of high school, playing place kicker.
At the age of 20 Joe decided to give competitive cycling a shot and has been hooked since. Finding his niche in tRACk cycling he has competed at the Collegiate National Championships twice. Joe has been through the ups and downs of controlling his diabetes. He has struggled to keep tight control to having a strong hold
on his blood sugar.
One of Joe’s goals is to show other diabetics that they, too, can compete at the highest level of any sport they choose, regardless of
their diabetes.
Joe has been active in the pursuit of a cure since he was diagnosed in 1992. There is a Birmingham Walk to Cure team named “Joe’s Team” that is composed of friends and supporters of Joe. Joe has participated in Ride to Cure the past 2 years
and has raised over $12,000 through the support of friends and family that share in his passion to find a cure.
Joe has graduated from Auburn University and works in Tennessee.
Joe welcomes questions and advice on managing diabetes and struggles with life as a diabetic.
Special thanks to: Dave and Joyce Eldridge, Dr. Joycelyn A. Atchison (Pediatric Endocrinology), Chad Rodekohr, and all my friends and family. Thanks
