RWANDA 2011Be a part of the mission to enrich the lives of children struggling to survive with diabetes in Rwanda. In Rwanda, many children and adolescents with diabetes die very quickly. Other young people struggle to survive with insufficient access to insulin,
diabetes testing supplies or trained diabetes healthcare providers. Unable to control their blood glucose, they develop complications early in life. In low-income countries, it is not uncommon to find youths and young adults with devastating complications such as eye damage and kidney failure. For these young people, the years spent developing complications are desperately unpleasant and unhappy.
Team Type 1's mission to provide life-saving diabetes supplies for Rwandan children began in 2010. In 2010 Team Type 1 provided 35,000 strips to 400 children of Rwanda who were
struggling to survive due to inadequate supplies.
In 2011, the program of type 1 children has grown to 650 children. With the diabetes test strips
available to them, the children can now test up to three times per day for a year, where prior to these efforts they were testing once per week, or even once per month. The impact of the efforts are very clear, all of us together can make a significant difference in the lives of the less fortunate with a small contribution of test strips or donation.
Team Type 1 founder and CEO, Phil Southerland speaks about the 2011 Rwanda campaign, "The Rwanda effort last year was one of the most meaningful experiences I have ever had. The opportunity to interact with the kids - to watch their faces as they talked with our team and got to know young, healthy athletes who are managing their diabetes well. To see the impact the 35,000 test strips and
test strips and diabetes supplies we brought were going to make, and that those 400 kids in the program last year have became 650 this year, that’s progress - that’s a longer, better life for each of these kids. This year though, we are attempting to significantly increase our commitment and take one million test strips. Imagine what that will do."
Throughout 2011, you and Team Type 1 can once again make a difference in the
lives of the children of Rwanda by providing much needed diabetes test strips or
cash donation to purchase diabetes test strips. Your financial contribution or
donation of excess, unused and unopened test strips will allow the children of
Rwanda to better manage their diabetes condition and dramatically improve their
lives.
Thank you for your compassion and generosity.
