Age: 41

Age diagnosed: 15

Most vivid memory of your diagnosis? I am proud to have never spent a single night in the hospital due to my diabetes. My mom is a nurse and suspected something wasn’t right and decided we needed to get in to see the doctor. After I was diagnosed the doctor explained to me that I would need to take insulin shots for the rest of my life. He told me my mom or dad could give me the shot until I got comfortable working with the needles, but I said no, if I am going to have to do this the rest of my life, I might as well get started now. Later, many hours after taking my first insulin shot, I remember how well I felt. That was the beginning of a great relationship.

Family: Single and dating with a tremendous family and an incredibly circle of friends.

 Current A1C: 6.5

Goal for next A1C: Live my best life

Riding Experience: I started road Racing in 2000: USCF Road Racing Category 3 & Masters. I recently started competing in all distances of Triathlon. I competed in Ironman Arizona in April of 2005 and will compete in Ironman Canada in August 2006.

  • RAAM in June, 2006
  • Ironman Canada in August 2006)

Training Regime / Racing regime: I deal with short light days in the winter and resign myself to the trainer, swimming and running at least an hour each day during the week, and get long rides in on the weekend. Most rides with my team www.bricyclingteam.com  on the weekend are between 3-5 hours and I usually will spin the other day on my TT bike which may include a brick workout with swimming or running.

I enjoy Racing my road bike in criterium and circuit Races and competing in sprint and Olympic distance triathlons for building fitness and Race readiness through out the rest of the season.

Job/employer: Entrepreneur. I have the honor of sharing equity and management of several businesses which I am passionate about.

I co-founded a non-profit foundation whose sole purpose is to mentor and help diabetics live with their condition, so they can see the day a cure is found. If I had the time and money, I would spend all my days working on this philanthropic foundation.  DAWF: Diabetes and Wellness Foundation: www.dawf.org

What do you enjoy most about being a diabetic? It has made me diligent in my pursuit of a healthy lifestyle. A benefit in taking on the delicate balance of blood sugars, fuel and exercise. I feel lucky to have been given a condition that prompts me to better manAge: my wellness through a healthy lifestyle.

Most memorable event (pre- or post-diagnosis), sporting or personal: A year after graduating from college, I Co-Founded and operated a clothing business over the course of ten years. The business grew in size and volume and taught me valuable lessons in business A1Cumen and life. I had the opportunity to unwind a business that I spent 0 years of my life building and nurturing. It was an invaluable experience in business, but, it taught me more about people, life’s priorities and myself. Ultimately that experience has helped me define what is most important in my life today.

Give us a few words of wisdom, some personal advice... : Get to know your body and its unique physical demands and attributes. Doctors, nurses and aides can give you help with your treatment regimens, but they can’t live, or take responsibility for your life.   I look up to anyone who struggles through adversity. To struggle is natural and innate in human nature, and we all need it in our lives to realize our strengths and weaknesses.  I am inspired and motivated by peers that test the boundaries that others impose. My dreams are made possible by those countless other diabetics.   I have a lot to prove, primarily to myself. I DO, TO PROVE I CAN !.
