Lonny Knabe, a native Oregonian, was diagnosed with diabetes when he was 9. When he was 33-years-old and a program manager for a national sportswear company, Lonny met Team Type 1 athlete, Jeff Bannink, on a lunchtime ride. The two athletes became friends and eventually teammates on the winning 8-person, record-setting RAAM team in 2009!


Knabe graduated from Willamette University in 1998 (BS) and again in 2008 (MBA). Knabe’s wife, Wende, is a cyclist as well. In fact, in the summer of 2008, the couple cycled from Paris to Trier (Germany’s oldest city), where cycling is a beloved pastime. His athletic background includes running the 400 intermediate hurdles in college. In high school, he participated twice in the High School Oregon State Track & Field Championships and played in the 1994 Shrine Bowl All-star football game.
