When he was 22 years old and just out of college, Mark Suprenant was misdiagnosed and treated for type 2 diabetes. After losing a lot of weight (a symptom of type 1 diabetes), he was taken to Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston, properly diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, and put on insulin therapy.
Six years later, Suprenant was participating in—and winning—bicycle races. He also began to compete in cyclocross, a grueling mix of mountain biking and road cycling with a touch of steeplechase—running crosscountry through ditches and other obstacles while shouldering one’s bike! A chance encounter with Phil Southerland led to his recruitment for Team Type 1’s defense of its Race Across America (RAAM) Corporate Team title in 2008. In 2009, Suprenant was a member and co-captain of the record-setting 2009 RAAM team.
With a wife and 2 boys, Suprenant’s goal for 2010 is to keep 4 aspects of his life in balance: bicycle riding, family, work, and diabetes.
