FABIO CALABRIA*

  • Golden, CO
  • Age: 25
  • Professional Since 2008

Fabio Calabria raced on 5 continents in 2011, with top-10s at Canada's Tour de Beauce, key assistance at the Tour of Korea and the Sprint jersey at Australia's national championships. With type 1 diabetes, he reaches out to the community of patients and their families affected by the disease to show what can be achieved with hard work, good control and the proper technology.

For a guy raised in the hurry-up-and-bash-em world of regional Australian track racing, Fabio's the kind of guy who surprises you with how fast he is, and how much he relishes the hotdog role. Attacking off the front in the Tour of Utah, pledging his legs to the service of his teammates, he's a selfless sacrificer for the greater good. And with his diabetes management he's an important role model to kids diagnosed with the disease who have nowhere to turn. Watch him mid-race this year, when the heat is on, and the chase is underway. He'll be doing double duty ferrying water bottles from the car and holding the pace high to protect the lead.
